Victor Dzau

Dr. Victor Dzau is currently the Chancellor for Health Affairs at Duke University, the President and CEO of Duke University Health System, and James B Duke Professor of Medicine. Dr. Dzau served as the William Irwin Professor and the Arthur Bloomfield Professor of Medicine and the Chairman of Department of Medicine at Stanford University, and most recently as the Hersey Professor of Theory and Practice of Medicine and Chairman of Medicine of Harvard Medical School at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Dr. Dzau has made a significant impact on medicine through his pioneering research targeting renin angiotensin for cardiovascular therapy and recently his leadership in Healthcare and Innovation. His vision is that Academic Health Centers must lead the Transformation of Medicine through innovation, translation, diffusion and globalization. Leading this initiative at Duke, he with others developed the Duke Translational Medicine Institute, the Duke Global Health Institute, the Duke-National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School and strategic alliances with Peking University and others, in order to create a seamless continuum from "Bench to Bedside to Global Population'. Dr. Dzau believes that Academic Health Centers can become an important force in developing solutions for global medicine through private-public partnerships bridging research, training and care delivery.
He has received honours and recognitions including the Gustav Nylin Medal from the Swedish Royal College of Medicine, the Max Delbruck Medal from Humboldt University, Charite and Max Planck Institute, the Commemorative Gold Medal from Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich and Frey-Werle Foundation, the Polzer Prize from the European Society of Sciences and Arts, the Ellis Island Medal of Honour of USA, the Norvatis Award for Hypertension Research, and the Distinguished Scientist Award of the American Heart Association. He has received 5 honorary degrees including the 2008 Honorary Doctor of Science from McGill University and was also recently recognized by Harvard University with the naming of the "Victor J Dzau Lectureship in Global Health" and the establishment of the "Victor J Dzau Professorship in Medicine" at Harvard.
Dr. Dzau serves/has served on many committees and boards including the Executive Committee of The Academy at Harvard Medical School, the Boards of Directors of Stanford Health System, Partners Healthcare System, Duke University Health System, the Governing Board of the Duke NUS Graduate Medical School, the Council of NHLBI, the Council of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences as well as the medical advisory board for the Gairdner Foundation in Canada. He has served as the Chairman of the NIH Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee, Chairman of the Council of Atherosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology of the American Heart Association, the Advisory Board for Canadian Institute of Health Research, Chairman of the External Board of the McClaughlin Center of Molecular Medicine of the University of Toronto and Scientific Board of the University Hospital Network of Toronto. Currently, he is also a member of the Board of Directors for Pepsico, Inc., Alnylam Inc., Genzyme Corporation and Medtronic Inc.
